With the aim of bringing convenience and meeting the needs of international tourists, Vietnam has officially applied the Electronic Visa (E-visa) system to open its doors to tourists from all countries in the world. Electronic visas are the optimal and convenient solution without having to spend time and effort on procedures at the embassy. The issuance of electronic visas for foreigners is streamlined, bringing convenience to individuals in need.
1. Concept of Vietnam electronic visa (E-visa Vietnam)
Electronic visa (Electronic visa, E-visa) is a type of electronic visa issued to foreigners to enter a country. Accordingly, Vietnam e-visa is a type of electronic visa issued by a competent authority of Vietnam through electronic transactions, allowing foreigners to enter Vietnam for various purposes such as tourism, work, business, visiting relatives, etc.
According to Clause 21, Article 8 of the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam 2014 (amended and supplemented in 2019), Vietnam e-visa is symbolized as EV. Vietnam e-visa is valid for single or multiple entries and is valid for no more than 90 days (Clause 2, Article 9, amended and supplemented in 2023). The duration and number of entries will be clearly stated on the issued visa.
Vietnam e-visa is classified depending on the purpose for which foreigners enter Vietnam. Commonly used types of e-visas include:
– Commercial e-visas: for foreigners entering Vietnam for work or business.
– Tourist e-visas: for foreigners entering Vietnam for tourism or sightseeing in Vietnam.
– Visiting e-visas: for foreigners entering Vietnam to visit relatives.
2. Subjects granted e-visas for Vietnam
According to Clause 5, Article 10 of the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam 2014 (amended and supplemented in 2019), e-visas are granted to foreigners with passports and are not subject to the provisions of Clauses 1, 2, 3 and 4, Article 8 of this Law. In addition, Article 1 of Resolution No. 127/NQ-CP of the Government on the application of e-visas for citizens of countries and territories; International border gates allowing foreigners to enter and exit with electronic visas stipulate that Vietnam officially applies electronic visas for citizens of all countries and territories. 3. Conditions for being granted a Vietnam e-visa
To be granted a Vietnam e-visa, the applicant for an e-visa must meet the following conditions:
(i) Foreigners who are abroad and need to apply for a visa to enter Vietnam and are not subject to the provisions of Clauses 1, 2, 3 and 4, Article 8 of the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam 2014 (amended and supplemented in 2019);
(ii) Valid passport or international travel document: The passport must have blank pages for entry stamps. This is a mandatory requirement to ensure that foreigners can stay in Vietnam throughout the duration of the Vietnam e-visa;
(iii) Not subject to one of the cases not allowed to enter Vietnam as prescribed in Article 21 of the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam 2014.
4. Application for Vietnam e-visa
Application for Vietnam e-visa includes:
– Information on the e-visa application on the e-visa information page or the National Public Service Portal or the Ministry of Public Security’s Public Service Portal according to form NA1a issued with Circular No. 22/2023/TT-BCA of the Ministry of Public Security;
– A recent photo of the e-visa applicant, size 4 x 6cm, jpeg format, size  2MB, face looking straight, no hat, no glasses, polite clothes, white background;
– A photo of the passport personal information page uploaded to the e-visa information page according to regulations.
5. Procedures for requesting a Vietnam e-visa for foreigners
Step 1: Access the e-visa information page of the Immigration Department – Ministry of Public Security at the link https://thithucdientu.gov.vn/ or https://evisa.gov.vn/ and click on the “Declare here” button. Next, read and select the following boxes to continue:
 Confirm compliance with Vietnamese laws as prescribed upon entry.
 Confirm that you have read the instructions carefully and prepared all documents.
Step 2: Upload a portrait photo and 01 passport personal information page of the person requesting an e-visa as required.
Step 3: Fill in all required information in the sections, including:
1. Personal information;
2. Information for requesting an e-visa: here the e-visa applicant will be able to choose the value of the e-visa and the duration of the e-visa;
3. Passport information;
4. Contact information;
5. Occupation;
6. Travel information: to be granted a Vietnam e-visa for tourism, in the “Purpose of entry” box, the e-visa applicant selects the purpose as “Tourist”;
After filling in the information, the e-visa applicant clicks on the “Declaration” box and presses the “Continue” button.
Step 4: Check and verify the accuracy of the information to avoid the case of the application being rejected due to missing or incorrect information. After completing this step, the e-visa applicant will receive an electronic application code from the system.
Step 5: Pay the e-visa fee via bank transfer to the specified account after receiving the e-visa code from the system. The e-visa fee is specified as follows:
– Single-entry visa: 25 USD/e-visa.
– Multiple-entry visa: 50 USD/e-visa.
Note: The e-visa fee will not be refunded if the application is rejected or if there is any incorrect information on the e-visa provided by the e-visa applicant during the application process.
Step 6: Receive the result.
The processing time for an e-visa application is no more than 03 working days from the date of receipt of complete e-visa application information and visa fee.
The e-visa applicant uses the issued e-file code to check the results at the link mentioned in Step 1. Here, the e-visa applicant clicks on “Search”, then enters all the information including e-file code, email, date of birth and confirmation code; finally clicks on the “Search” button.
If the application is approved and the Vietnam tourist e-visa is issued, the e-visa applicant uses this code to print the e-visa.
